    5th Semester in Portland Maine

I just wanted to post a sticky regarding the 5th semester program in Portland Maine, where current and prospective students can post questions, comments, and any additional information that may be beneficial, such as housing, etc.

Summary of the program from the UMHS website is found below:

The University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS) is pleased to announce the formation of a Fifth Semester campus in Portland, Maine beginning September 2008. The fifth semester consists of the following required courses, Introduction to Clinical Medicine II and Biological Basis of Clinical Medicine.

The UMHS facilities will include the latest in simulation and technology resources and a library and learning resource center. Virtual clinics utilizing human simulators will be a regular student experience.

All student clinical experiences will be conducted by a team of experienced Maine physicians, many of whom have decades of both medical practice and teaching experience. Students will be assigned to physicians in actual patient care settings at several hospitals, clinics and office health centers in and around the Portland area.

UMHS has also formed a contract with Kaplan Medical that will allow UMHS students access to a quality comprehensive USMLE review during the 5th semester program.

The tailored review program will include a diagnostic examination with detailed analysis and individual feedback, both live and online lectures, full-length simulated Step 1 exam and comprehensive lecture notes.

    Updates

Just wondering if there are students that are starting in Maine this semester could keep the rest of us updated on your experience there, like housing, food and other things.

    $40 million

I just wanted to add that the school built a $40 million building for the students from what I understand in Portland. Mr. R is doing a excellent job as president and truly cares for the students by making sure we have everything we need to succeed.

While I certainly would agree with Medicine2k6 that the President is doing an excellent job and he really does care about the students, I do have to correct the comment about the $40 million dollar building in Portland. I think that it would be more accurate if we said that our Founder built a $40 million campus in St. Kitts, much of which was designed and equipped by the President.

The campus in Portland is still in development but already provides our students with the resources they need to be successful in the 5th Semeter program.

Of course, if Medicine2k6 wants to donate $40 million dollars to the University, we would be able to speed up the development of the Portland campus. I suspect the President might even be willing to name the building the "Medicine2k6 Hall of Medicine"!

All joking aside, thanks for the kind words, Medicine2k6, about the President. He works very hard to earn them!
