    I’ll do it later. I have more time. This won’t take that long. I have no idea what I’m doing. These are things we have all said. And let us be honest, we never finish the tasks we set out to do. But why? Why do we procrastinate? And is it wrong? Can we overcome it?
    Fiendishly known as the “thief of time”, procrastination plagues all of us; especially students. Researchers found that approximately 25 to 75 percent of college students procrastinate. A 2007 study showed that 80 to 95 percent of college students were serial procrastinators, who failed to complete assignments and coursework. Another study revealed that procrastination is one of the main reasons Ph.D. candidates fail to complete their dissertations. In their book Procrastination and Task Avoidance: Theory, Research, and Treatment, Ferrai, Johnson and McCown examine the reasons students procrastinate. According to the students often procrastinate because of they:

    · Overestimate the length of time they have to complete their tasks.
    · Misjudge their motivation to accomplish the assignment later.
    · Misconstrue their state of mind.

    Uncertainty is also a prohibition. When a student is unsure about a project, insecurities arise and they usually postpone the project until it is too late.
    It goes without saying that students are not the only ones that fall prey to procrastination. Professor of Psychology at DePaul University, ****** Ferrari, recorded in his book Still Procrastinating: The No Regret Guide to Getting It Done, approximately 20 percent of adults in the United States are habitual procrastinators. They are late for every aspect of their lives. For example, paying bills, paying taxes, making deadlines, etc. This type of chronic procrastination can have a serious impact on the individual and society by extension. For the individual, it causes mental strain. Another study conducted in 2007, students who procrastinate at the beginning of the semester have lower stress levels than non-procrastinators but by finals, their stress levels significantly increase, which often leads to illness. Society is affected because family, friends, co-workers, fellow students are burdened with completing the task, which hinders their work as well.
    But is procrastination always detrimental? Consider the unfortunate events that took place on 9/11. There are numerous accounts of people who procrastinated on that day. For instance, a Washington businesswoman, who never liked to pay more than $1000 for business trips, had reluctantly paid for her ticket on the ill-fated jetliner. After locating a cheaper flight a few days later, she canceled. Had not for that last minute decision she would have been one of the casualties.
    Let us also remember that there are those who work better under pressure. One is less likely to waste time when trying to meet a pending deadline. It also forces you to keep things simple which means less stress.
    However, if procrastination does not work for you, here are a few solutions:

    · Be realistic in setting deadlines.
    · Try to tackle the task as soon as possible.
    · Minimize distractions. Turn off your social media, television, etc.
    · Have an accountability buddy. A person or an app that will help you to remain focused. You can set breaks on your phone or computer.
    · Breakdown projects to make it more manageable. Set a time limit for completing a task and reward yourself.
    · Establish priorities.
    · Know yourself and set goals that best suit you.

    It does not matter whether you are studying or not, it is always advisable to have a plan and a strategy to execute it, however best it works for you. Take heed, “lost time is never found again”, Benjamin Franklin.
