Re: Beer if free from alcohol can it initiate gout?
As you may have recently heard, non-alcoholic beer intake seems to be associated with an increased risk of hyperuricemia, the root cause of gout. First and foremost, ethanol ingestion can increase serum urate through both decreased renal urate excretion and increased uric acid precursors, products of adenosine triphosphate degradation. By law, non-alcoholic beers sold in the United States can contain up to 0.5% alcohol by volume (ABV). Nevertheless, beer not only contains alcohol, but it also has a high concentration of purine. Standard beers have an alcohol content of about 1 gram per 100 mL, but they also contain about 8 mg purines per 100 mL. In humans, the final compound of purines catabolism is uric acid. In conclusion, it is a good idea for a gout patient to cut back on alcohol consumption, including potentially with moderate amounts and regardless of the type of alcoholic beverage, to prevent recurrent gout attacks.
