    ACIDITY
    Introduction
    Acidity is not a disease but a symptom. It is a symptom associated with many diseases of the stomach. Excess of acid in the stomach is known as hyperacidity.
    Causes

    • Smoking
    • Alcohol
    • Intake of spicy, fried food
    • Intake of foods rich in fats like chocolates, etc
    • Irregular eating hours
    • Irregular sleeping hours
    • Irritable Personality

    Diseases that May Cause Hyperacidity

    • GERD – Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease
    • H Pylori Infection
    • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
    • Hypercalcaemia
    • Gall-stones

    Symptoms

    • Heartburn i.e. burning sensation around heart (worse lying down)
    • chest and stomach pain in adults
    • gases and flatulence
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Inadequate weight gain

    Investigations

    • CBC, with ESR
    • Gastroscopy if required.

    Diagnosis
    Diagnosis is based upon history of above symptoms, gastroscopic findings.


    Preventive tips:
    A) Diet:
    You are what you eat! The food which we ate will reflect in terms of your all bodily functions like digestion, excretion, etc.
    The wrong dietary habits and eating unhealthy food plays important role in forming acidity. These habits lead to altered digestion increased acid production in stomach.
    One can prevent himself from acidity by few simple dietary guidelines mentioned below:

    • Plan your daily timings for meals and do not skip any meals
    • You should drink plenty of water
    • Avoid taking large meals
    • Avoid eating spicy food.
    • Do not drink cold milk as it gives only temporary soothing effect. Once it gets digested, it is broken down into calcium and protein further worsening heartburn.
    • Eat rice in major proportion as they are rich in carbohydrates.
    • Eat at least 2-3 hours before sleep
    • Avoid eating refined, fried, junk food stuffs
    • Restrict your consumption of coffee
    • Limit the intake of carbonated drinks
    • Try to avoid alcohol



    B) Lifestyle:
    Nowadays every individual is struggling for his/her survival. Everybody is working harder and harder. The working hours are also extended along with rotational shifts. Many people have to work at night shifts.
    All these lifestyle changes are affecting your body. All the bodily functions including your digestion are influenced by your lifestyle.
    The individual should adapt himself/herself to follow few modifications in daily routine as mentioned below:

    • Take adequate sleep for 6-7 hours
    • Excessive use of antacids should be avoided
    • Avoid taking over the counter medicines frequently esp. painkillers.
    • Don’t take your meals while watching television or doing any work
    • If you are eating too quickly then, you should improve yourself
    • Do not sleep immediately after your meals, have a short walk after meals.

    C) Psychological:
    Our body and mind are inter-related. Any type of stress, anxieties and mental disturbances may reflect in terms of illness.
    Some simple modifications as mentioned below can be useful to avoid acidity:


    • Avoid too much stress
    • Overcome your worries, tensions; try to indulge in your hobbies
    • If you are having too much of stress/ anxiety, etc. and you are not able to tackle it then, your psychologist can help you in a better way
    • Regular 20-30 minutes practice of yoga and meditation should be done
    • Music therapy can be useful to relieve your stress
